AI-driven development forces developers to change perspective
When code is cheap to produce, the craft moves from writing it to steering it. The view that matters is no longer the street, but the whole city.
For years a developer’s day was spent at street level: one function, one file, one bug at a time. AI-driven development changes the scale of the work. Writing the code is no longer the slow part.
From the street to the city
When an assistant can produce a working module in minutes, the question shifts from how do I write this? to should this exist, and how does it fit with everything else? The developer’s attention moves up: to boundaries, data flows and the cost of change.
What stays at street level
Details still matter. Someone has to read the diff, run the system and notice what feels wrong. The difference is that this is now a choice about where to look, not a necessity.
What this means for teams
- Review and verification become the main skills.
- Architecture decisions are made earlier and revisited more often.
- Small teams can own much larger systems.
